Contraceptive Coverage Bill Becomes Law
July 18, 2003
Des Plaines,
IL
A new law in Illinois requires insurance carriers
to provide coverage to women for outpatient prescription
contraceptive drugs, devices and services, according to
the bills cosponsor, State Representative Rosemary
Mulligan (R-Des Plaines).
"This new
law will help women afford costly prescription contraceptives,"
said Mulligan. "Over the years that has become a common
complaint among women that there is no relief for them from
the high cost of birth control, and yet, drugs for men,
like Viagra are covered by insurance."
House Bill 211
provides coverage for outpatient services and outpatient
prescription drugs or devices, must provide coverage for
the insured and any dependent covered by the policy for
outpatient contraceptive services, outpatient contraceptive
drugs or devices approved by the FDA.
The new law takes
effect January 1, 2004.
